The stage in both meiosis and mitosis when the chromosome arrange themselves on the mitotic spindle in preparation for the movement of the two sets to opposite ends of the cell during anaphase. In Mitosis metaphase occurs just once in meiosis twice - hence metaphase I (left hand diagram) and metaphase II (right hand diagram).
